Jade Carving: How We Transform Raw Stone into Art | ZaraJay

At ZaraJay Jade, every piece of jewelry begins as a rough, unassuming stone—a hidden treasure waiting to be revealed. Jade carving is an ancient art, blending patience, precision, and passion. Today, we're pulling back the curtain on how we transform raw jade into wearable masterpieces.

Step 1: Selecting the Perfect Stone

Not all jade is created equal. We source only the finest:

  • Australian Black Jade – Dense, durable, and deeply mystical
  • Guatemalan Blue Jadeite – Rare and vibrant
  • BC Nephrite – Classic green with unmatched toughness

Each slab is hand-selected for color consistency, hardness, and natural patterning.

Step 2: Designing the Vision

Before carving begins, we:

  • Sketch designs inspired by nature, geometry, and cultural symbolism
  • Map inclusions (natural flaws) to incorporate into the art
  • Choose between modern sleek cuts or organic freeform shapes

Fun Fact: Our signature Pi Disc Pendants were born from this phase!

Step 3: Rough Shaping

Using diamond-tipped tools, we:

  1. Slice the raw stone into workable blocks
  2. Grind edges to approximate shape
  3. Sand surfaces to remove deep imperfections

This stage is loud, dusty, and utterly thrilling—watching the stone's potential emerge.

Step 4: Hand Carving & Detailing

Here, magic happens. With rotary tools and hand chisels, we:

  • Define contours (like the twists in our hook pendants)
  • Etch intricate textures (e.g., "live edge" finishes)
  • Drill holes for cords or settings

Pro Tip: Jade must be kept wet during carving to prevent cracking!

Step 5: Polishing to Perfection

A 7-step polishing process brings out the inner glow:

  1. Coarse grit (220)
  2. Medium (600)
  3. Fine (3000)
  4. Felt wheel buffing
  5. Cerium oxide shine
  6. Ultrasonic cleaning
  7. Final hand-rub with natural oils

The result? A
